“on balance” series introduction.

One of my big realizations of 2009 was that most conductors I know are something of gourmands. In addition to being a gifted educator, my partner is an outrageous cook himself; many of our friends are equally passionate about gastronomy, even to the point where a 5-star restaurant is a religious experience! I suppose it’s much like the interior designer who is also extremely fashionable themselves, or the accountant who is an organization nut: conductors love balance, and outside of music, one of the best places to find it happens to be food. So over the next few entries let’s dive into the balances that go on in orchestra members’ playing and the conductor’s guiding…
